After breakfast, your expert Egyptologist guide will escort you from your Cairo hotel to Alexandria, the historic Mediterranean city founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle.
Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa
Explore this fascinating 2nd-century burial site, one of the most remarkable underground necropolises in Egypt. Carved deep into the rock across three levels, its chambers blend Roman, Greek, and ancient Egyptian artistic styles in a way found almost nowhere else, with funerary sculptures depicting Egyptian gods dressed in Roman armor.
Roman Theater
Visit Egypt’s only surviving Roman theater, a beautifully preserved site with impressive marble seating arranged in a graceful semicircle. Excavations here also uncovered an extensive complex of ancient baths and mosaic-floored halls, offering a glimpse into everyday Roman life in the city.
Pompey’s Pillar
Marvel at this towering granite column, standing 27 meters tall and erected in 297 AD to honor the Roman emperor Diocletian, despite its misleading name. It rises dramatically among the ruins of the ancient Serapeum, once home to a great temple and, according to some accounts, a subsidiary library connected to Alexandria’s famous ancient collection.
Qaitbay Citadel
Discover this magnificent 15th-century fortress, built in 1477 on the very site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Constructed partly from the lighthouse’s fallen stones, the citadel commands a striking position at the harbor’s edge, with sweeping views across the Mediterranean.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina
After lunch, visit this striking modern library and cultural center, built as a tribute to the great ancient Library of Alexandria. Its bold sun-disk design tilts toward the sea, and inside it houses millions of books, manuscripts, and exhibits celebrating knowledge, science, and Alexandria’s role as an ancient center of learning. Please note that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and public holidays.
Afterward, return to your Cairo hotel for overnight.
Overnight in Cairo.
